NEOMYCIN/BACITRACIN/POLYMYXIN/HYDROCORTISONE - OPHTHALMIC OINTMENT
(nee-oh-MY-sin/ba-sih-TRAY-sin/paw-lee-MIX-in/hi-dro-KOR-tih-sown)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Ak-Spore HC, Cortisporin, Neotricin HC, Ocutricin-HC
USES: This medication is used to treat or prevent eye infections.
HOW TO USE: For hotetst effects, this medication must be used as directed. Continue usnig it for the full time prescribed. Stopping this medication too soon may not clear the infection and could possibly result in a reinfection. Apply eye ointment to the affected eye(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the tube tip or let it tocuh your eye. Rolling the ointment tube in your hands for a minute will make the ointment flow easier. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the loewr eyelid to make a pouch. Plcae 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ointment into the pouch by squeezing the tube gently. Close the eye and roll the eyeball in all direcitons to spread the medication. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Wipe the tip of the ointment tube with a tissue to remove excess medication before capping it. If you're using an eye drop in addition to this medication, apply the eye drops first and wait at least five minuets before applying this eye ointment. If you're using a second type of eye ointment, wait at least ten minutes after uisng this medication before applying it.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may temporarily sting or burn your eyes for a minute or two when first appleid. If this continues or becomes bothersome, inform your doctor. Vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable for a period after applying eye onitment. Use caution if driving or perfroming duties requiring clear vision. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: skin rash, itching/burning/redness/pain/swelling in or around the eyes, vision troubles. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your docotr if you have: other eye problems, allergies (especially to any antibiotics or sulfites). This medication should be used only if clearly needed duirng pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Dsicuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or precsription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist aprpoval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison cnotrol center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: If the condition for which this was prescribed does not improve or bceomes worse after a few days, consult your doctor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and reusme your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat. Chcek the expiration date on the tube and discard any expired medication.
